Goal

  • Develop fluency and literacy in two languages

  • Achieve proficiency in all academic subjects

  • Cultivate an understanding and appreciation of other cultures, and develop positive attitudes toward fellow students, their families and community

Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy Award is given in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

A mastery of two or more languages is important. Our District and school encourage students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and biliteracy skills can be attractive to future employers and college admission offices.

Spanish Language Arts Background and History

  • Started at Hatch Elementary K-5 as a district magnet program in 1991

  • Staffed with certified bilingual teachers supported by parents

  • Learn more about the CUSD Immersion Program

Goals for Expansion K-12

  • Expand and coordinate an articulated Two Way Immersion Program K-12, which provides English only and Spanish speaking students the opportunity to become fully bilingual and biliterate

  • Engage parents in their children's instructional program through parent involvement activities, adult education, and trainings

Financial Impact

Funding for the District's Immersion Program comes from the General Fund, categorical dollars, and parent donations.

CUNHA PURSUIT OF BILINGUALISM AWARD

An award designed to celebrate engagement in the pursuit of language skills in two or more languages, to affirm positive attitudes towards multilingualism, and to validate use of multiple languages for all students. To be awarded at the end of 8th grade.
