6TH GRADE MATH PLACEMENT

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, all incoming sixth grade students will be placed in Common Core Math 6. The Cunha Math Department will be in its second year using our newly adopted Common Core math curriculum from College Preparatory Math (CPM), the Core Connection series. The adoption of CPM was a result of extensive piloting of other Common Core math curricula over the past several years. Cunha's math teachers have attended extensive training in the State of California Common Core math Practice Standards, the State of California Common Core Math Curriculum Standards and the CPM textbook materials.

2013 CPS RESEARCH PROJECT

In the seven years since the original CPM Research Report was posted, the new research has continued to validate the efficacy of the three pillars of CPM pedagogy:

  • Students learn ideas more deeply when they discuss ideas with classmates
  • Students learn ideas more usefully for other arenas when they learn by attacking problems-ideally from the real world
  • Students learn ideas more permanently when they are required to engage and re-engage with the ideas for months or even years

CORE CONNECTIONS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

CPM Educational Program, a California non-profit corporation, has provided problem-based instructional materials and professional development for teachers since its inception in 1989. "College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM)" was originally an Eisenhower-funded grant program. CPM teaching strategies focus on how students best learn and retain mathematics. Teaching strategies rely on the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and are based solidly on the methodological research in teaching mathematics.

CPM COURSE DESIGN

CPM COURSE DESIGN

The entire CPM Core Connections series was designed and written based on these assumptions about student learning:

  • Mathematics is a coherent intellectual system, not a collection of disjointed facts, and needs to be taught in a way that makes this coherence clear
  • A curriculum should succeed with all students, including "traditionally struggling" students and "accelerated" students

RESEARCH ON MIXED, SPACED PRACTICE

The biggest change in the research pertaining to CPM in the past six years has been the huge rise in interest in what is now known as mixed, spaced practice . At the time that the previous review summary was written there were only a few dozen papers dealing with this topic. Now there are almost 2000. Many researchers are taking the idea seriously.
